Preventive Measures and Determinants of Health Status

Health, as defined by the World Health Organization, is a condition in which the body is able to overcome viruses, diseases and other harmful elements that can harm its functioning. A number of definitions have also been used over the years for various purposes. It is also known as “the good life”. This statement actually goes hand in hand with the belief that there are some key factors that contribute to health. Some people define health in different ways, but all of them agree on one thing: it is the ability of the body to withstand damage, illness, or injury.

The goal of any health care system is to meet the needs and the priority of the individuals. There are so many health systems around the world and each one has its own way of doing so. One group from the US has taken on the challenge to create a definition for health care that will be used by every single health system. It is called the World Health Organization’s Universal Health System.

The system involves several determinants, which include history of disease, mortality, demographics, and public health measures. It is made up of different aspects such as demographics and determinants. For example, demographics includes the basic facts regarding the current and the past health status of the population. Determinants refer to the intervention that health care systems do to ensure that the individual behavior of the population is influenced positively or negatively. Public health measures are included in this category.

Each individual behavior is influenced by these two determinants. For example, under public health care, preventable diseases are always prioritized. Each individual behavior also has an effect on the overall health services. For example, smoking and unhealthy eating habits cause negative effects on the overall health services. In the same way, some behaviors cause positive effects but not negative. Therefore, the goal of any health service is to balance the individual behavior with the public health.

One can thus say that both population and determinants have an impact on health services. A social determinant refers to the social conditions and environment which people are exposed to. Determinants refer to the medical determinants that influence the health status. The interaction between these two determines the health services received.

Some factors that are considered determinants of health status are the general quality of life, health risks and interventions, access to health services, and the extent of individual behavior. It is important to understand these determinants as they may vary according to context. An accurate identification of the social factors that affect health status is essential for the development of an effective health service. The ultimate aim is to achieve appropriate disease prevention and control.
