Determinants of Health

Health, according to the World Health Organization, is “an indivisible concept of good health that may be understood, measured, and promoted through its effect on the individual, family, community, and nations”. Various definitions have been employed over the years for various purposes. In medicine, health is typically associated with the care of the body, mind, and spirit. One of the most significant influences on health is the attitude one has toward life, as well as a person’s health care system.

The quality of an individual’s health can be influenced by several public health services. These services include general counseling, preventive care, immunization programs, screening and diagnosis of illness and diseases, health education and promotion, and utilization of health services. In addition, an individual’s diet, lifestyle, work, and other social characteristics are important determinants of their health. The purpose of this article is to provide an explanation of the broad range of public health services and the social determinants of health.

The quality of an individual’s health depends on several factors. A person’s gender, race/ethnicity, age, socioeconomic status, quality of life, and behaviors all play roles in health status. These determinants are influenced by the individual behaviors that are important in leading a healthy lifestyle. For example, healthy eating and regular exercise are influenced by the types of foods consumed, the frequency of these foods, and the physical exercise desired. Other factors that influence health status include public education, the quality of health services available, the prevalence of diseases and prevention methods, social factors such as social support and the influence of other individuals, and the quality of the medical environment.

Public health services help to create a healthier environment by creating better awareness about healthy behaviors and improving the availability of quality preventive care. This helps to create a “rainy day” for those with chronic conditions or disabilities. Prevention is one of the key determinants of health status because it can help to keep people from contracting infectious diseases and illnesses. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle, individuals may also decrease the frequency of hospital admissions due to acute illness and improve their overall health and well-being. Prevention is influenced by several social factors such as family income, access to quality health services, neighborhood environments, school environments, socialization, work, and other individual behaviors.

Individual behavior also has a significant effect on public health. Examples of determinants of individual behavior include self-esteem, attitudes about health and nutrition, socialization, exercise, and cultural beliefs. It is not uncommon for social norms to change over time, and changes in public opinion can impact the determinants of health. These determinants affect health care research, practice, and policy, and can potentially lead to improved patient health care.

The quality and severity of determinants of health status are influenced by changes in societal processes. These changes may include religious and community beliefs, socialization and exposure to different types of stressors, individual behaviors, and individual health services choices. These factors all interact to influence health status and can affect public health through a range of indirect consequences. These may range from influencing individual behavior and institutions that promote health, through influencing public policies that direct health services towards better achieving overall goals, and through affecting health care research, practice, and policy.
